Do you forget to put your morning essential oils on like me? Or what about those fancy diffusers? Yeah, I forget to do that too. Here’s how I still use my essential oils daily.
I have a problem
In my home, I use minimalism to help my sanity with 3 babies under 4. The combination of clutter and kids doesn’t jive well with me. Minimalism is great and I love it! But I have this problem…
I’m the kind of person who hates visual clutter. And I’m the kind of person who doesn’t use something if it’s out of sight. Do you see the issue here?
I used to have my essential oils on my kitchen window sill and it was great because I’d use them every morning, and put them in my diffusers throughout the house…but then the cluttered sight of essential oils all over the windowsill was driving me crazy. You see, I kept them very neatly on the windowsill and that still drove me crazy. So I put them under the kitchen sink and now…I forget about them.
Ughh! But I’ve found a way to still use them daily and receive the benefits of aromatherapy. Yayy!
Here we goooo!
1. Use essential oils daily by ditching grocery store soap
The biggest way I use EO daily is when washing my hands. I’ve switched all of our soaps including dish soap to homemade. I could make this in my sleep that’s how easy it is!
- Grab a 16 oz mason jar and a lid like this one from amazon.
- Fill the jar a quarter of the way with castile soap, 15-25 drops of EO, and fill the rest with water.
- Put the lid on and shake gently.
- Viola, good for you EO hand soap!
My favorite EO to use for dish soap is anything citrus. So orange, lemon, grapefruit, and lime. I also like to add a few drops of tea tree oil or lavender as a natural disinfectant.
For regular hand soap, the sky is the limit on what to use! Again, I like to use tea tree oil or lavender for their disinfectant properties.
Note: I do still use grocery store soaps for things like laundry detergent, and for most hair and body products. But I use the Think Dirty app to find the cleanest ones I can afford.
2. Use essential oils daily with makeup remover inspired by the Bible
This is the modern-day version of “and so and so anointed his head with oil and the spirit was upon him”-paraphrasing a lot here so don’t quote me. I like to think of the ancient women of history and how they used oils in their beauty routines daily.
I take a 4-ounce mason jar, fill it mostly with coconut oil and then add some EO (about 20 drops), and mix it around.
Some great EO to use for your skin are:
- Grapefruit
- Frankenseince
- Cedarwood
- Lavandar
- Lemongrass
- Ylang Ylang
- Rose
- Rosehip
- Orange
- Rosmary
- Geranium
- Tea Tree
The last time is made this (it lasts a while), I did 15 drops of grapefruit and 5 drops of tea tree oil. It smells so amazing!
Are essential oils safe for use on the face?
Short answer, yes!
Long answer, you have to know what you’re doing.
You have to be sure to dilute with the carrier oil properly. For the face, the dilution ratio is 6 drops to every 1oz of carrier oil (in this case the coconut oil). Considering there is about 4oz of coconut oil you can safely use up to 24 drops of essential oil in this face serum of sorts.

What about the types of EO used on face/skin?
I recently learned that there are essential oils with phototoxic properties. This means that if used on the face or skin, UV rays can cause them to react and cause almost a sunburn effect. Ouch! We don’t want that. How do you avoid this? Use only at night to give them 12-18 hours before exposure.
The types of EO that do this are as follows:
- Angelica Root
- Bergamot (Cold-pressed)
- Bitter Orange (Cold-pressed)
- Cumin
- Fig Leaf Absolute
- Grapefruit (Cold-pressed)
- Key Lime (Cold-pressed)
- Lemon (Cold-pressed)
- Lemon Verbena
- Lime (Cold-pressed)
- Mandarin Leaf
- Rue
- Tagete

How to use
Before bed, I take a little bit of this oil, rub it all over my face, and make sure to get my eyes really good. While I’m rubbing the oil on my face, I have the water running on a medium-high. I take a washcloth and get it all wet. Then I wring it out and place the towel over my face to sit and open my pores for a minute or two. Then I gently rub the cloth into my face removing the makeup, dirt, and oil.
This gets all the makeup off my face and cleans simultaneously. It’s quite the spa experience right before bed!
3. Clean counters with essential oil spray
The third and final way I use essential oils daily is by making a homemade counter spray. I didn’t start doing this until recently and I’m not sure why I never did it before! It’s quick and easy peasy lemon squeezy.
- Take a spray bottle, any one will do. It could be a recently used up one or a fancy glass spray bottle. It doesn’t matter.
- Fill about 1/3 with distilled vinegar.
- Take about 1/4 cup of castile soap
- Add 20-30 drops EO of choice (similar to the dish soap)
- Fill the rest with water
- Gently shake
- BAM! You have counter cleaner!
As you can see, you don’t have to be a crazy EO lady to use essential oils.
There’s nothing wrong with using them more elaborately but if you’re like me and you forget often, you can relax knowing many of your daily products are giving you the benefits of EO.
